What Is Bone Marrow Broth

So you might be wondering what is bone marrow broth? Bone marrow broth is an extremely nutrient liquid made by simmering marrow rich bones until the nutrients are extracted. Well that’s the short answer… Bone marrow broth can be made from the bones of most large land animals such as cattle, sheep, moose, bison, caribou. Even some large sea animals, such as whales and dolphins, have large marrow bones.

For a little more context, marrow is a soft spongy part of a large bone that is full of both macronutrients and micronutrients. Fat and protein are among the macronutrients. It is also rich in an abundance of vitamins and minerals, namely vitamin A and B12, iron, calcium, phosphorus, selenium, zinc, and choline. When extracted into a broth, these nutrients are heavily bioavailable. This means that because of the long slow cooking process, the nutrients are easily absorbed and digested by the body.

Benefits Of Bone Marrow Broth

So we already know that bone marrow broth is easily absorbed and digested. We also know that it is full of vitamins and minerals. Why else is this liquid gold so beneficial?

Well, the broth is highly beneficial for the gut. Did you know that so much of the immune system is in the gut?! A healthy gut microbiome means a healthy immune system! This broth is rich in collagen which is so very helpful in supporting the intestinal lining of the gut.

The amino acids in the broth help to strengthen the gut barrier. Regularly consuming bone marrow broth can even help to repair leaky gut syndrome when used often and in conjunction with a balanced healthy diet.

One last gold star for this broth is it’s anti-inflammatory properties. Specific amino acids, glycine and arginine, are wonderful and reducing inflammation in the body and contributing to overall joint health!

Step By Step Process

So, how do you go about making this broth? There are actually two methods of cooking, but first let’s go over the main ingredients.

You only really need to ingredients to make the broth, but I recommend adding more for flavor. The two non negotiable ingredients are water and marrow bones. These are the large bones of an animal like a cow that have lots of marrow inside. These bones are often taken from larger limbs like the femur. I highly recommend searching out your local butcher shops to find these, as they are likely much cheaper. However, if this is not an option, I’ll list a few companies that offer frozen bones that you can buy.

Additional Ingredients

Now onto the other ingredients. I highly recommend adding seasonings and root vegetables for flavor. You can take some liberty with this part and use what you like. Some great options for seasoning are salt and pepper, parsley, sage, thyme, and rosemary.

Some great options for veggies to add in are onions, carrots, celery, or leeks. Last of all, its beneficial to add just a small splash of vinegar to a large pot when making broth. Vinegar helps to extract the nutrients giving you an even more nutrient dense liquid.

Making The Broth

Once you have all your ingredients, you simply need to simmer! Use about 4 quarts of water for every 2-3 pounds of bones. Add all the ingredients to a large stock pot, and simmer for a minimum or 12 hours – but preferably much longer! The longer you simmer the bones, the more collagen and nutrients you’ll extract. I recommend simmering for closer to 36-48 hours to receive the full benefits!

An alternative method is to add all the ingredients to a large roaster pan with a lid and bake at 350 in the oven.

After you’ve baked or simmered your desired length, simply strain all the bones and bits of vegetable through a strainer. You can add a cheesecloth to the strainer if you want to remove even the tiniest particles. From there, simply store your broth in freezer safe containers in the freezer – or use within a week after refrigerating!

How To Use Your Bone Marrow Broth

There are so many ways to enjoy this delicious bone marrow broth. The first being to simply add it to your favorite mug and sip away! This is an incredibly nourishing drink to consume on its own. Drink this when you’re under the weather to give your immune system a major boost!

Some other options include making soups and stews, gravies, or pot pies. In addition, you can use this instead of water when boiling rice, or pasta to give some added nutrients! There are so many possibilities with this broth, and I’m sure you’ll be coming up with tons of recipes in no time for this nourishing nutrient dense bone marrow broth!
