While this breakfast would be delicious any time of the year, who doesn’t love an extra decadent breakfast around the holidays!? Christmas time is notorious for indulgent breakfasts and brunches, and this homemade sourdough French toast is bound to become a staple in your home around the holidays (and maybe year round ;)!

Preparing The Bread For Your Homemade Sourdough French Toast
The first step in creating this from scratch sourdough French toast is to prepare the loaf of bread. Now, just to add a little side note here – if you want to make this recipe, but haven’t allotted enough time to make the bread from scratch, you can still follow this recipe using a store bought sourdough bread. It will still be delicious!
However, to make the bread from scratch, you’ll need a stand mixer with a dough hook and some basic baking ingredients. Start by melting your butter in a small sauce pan over low heat.

Meanwhile, add the water, honey and salt to the bowl of the stand mixer. Once the butter is melted, add it also and whisk the ingredients together.
It is important to add these ingredients and to mix before adding the active sourdough starter. Otherwise, the hot melted butter could kill the starter when you add it. Add in the sourdough starter (it should be active – so plan to feed it several hours before making the recipe). Whisk the ingredients again.

Finally add in the flour. Knead the dough on low speed for about 7 minutes. Within the first 2 minutes, the dough should be forming a ball. If it is not, add in up to 1/2 cup extra flour (1/4 cup at a time) until a ball forms. Transfer the dough to a greased bowl and allow to rise and ferment until doubled in size.

Baking Your Sourdough Bread
Now that your dough has risen, it is almost time to bake it. However, you need to shape it first and allow for one final rise. Add some butter or coconut oil to your hands, and remove the dough from the bowl. Gently shape it into a loaf shape, and transfer it to 9X5 loaf pan. Be sure to either grease the pan or line it with parchment paper.

Allow the dough to rise again for about 1 hour. While it is rising preheat your oven to 350 degrees. Here’s a little tip. If you want your dough to rise more quickly, place it on the stove top or near your preheating oven to give it some extra warmth.
After the hour, simple transfer the loaf to the oven and bake for about 45 minutes until the loaf is turning slightly brown on top. Remove it from the loaf pan, and allow it to cool completely before slicing. If you’re wanting to make this recipe for Christmas morning, the loaf could certainly be baked ahead of time to jumpstart the process!

Preparing The Egg Mixture For Your Homemade Sourdough French Toast
Now that the loaf is baked, it’s time to prepare the egg mixture for soaking the bread. Crack your eggs into a shallow dish, and beat thoroughly. Add in the milk, vanilla, and cinnamon. Mix it all together until it is well combined.

Now, slice the loaf into pieces about 3/4 inch thick. Add the slices of bread to the egg mixture a couple pieces at a time.

Frying The French Toast
While the first round of bread is soaking, heat your skillet over medium, and add 1/2 tablespoon of butter. If your egg mixture wasn’t covering the bread slices, be sure to flip them over to thoroughly coat the other side.
Next, transfer the pieces of bread to the skillet and fry on each side for about 30-60 seconds until the coating is turning a beautiful golden brown. Remove the French toast, and serve on a festive plate!

Time To Top And Serve Your Delicious Homemade Sourdough French Toast
However, the French toast isn’t quite done until you’ve added your toppings. Feel free to top it with whatever you like, but here are some suggestions! I love topping my French toast with a generous amount of butter and pure maple syrup. A little fruit on top is the icing on the cake, and these delicious red raspberries are the perfect addition for this holiday inspired breakfast!
